CNN —More than 20 years after a mother found a human jawbone hidden in her son’s rock collection, genetic genealogy experts have unraveled the discovery and identified the partial remains of a US Marine Corps captain. In 2002, his mother found the collection, came across what looked to be human remains and contacted the sheriff’s office, authorities said in a statement. In January 2023, the sheriff’s office and the Yavapai County Medical Examiner referred the case to the Investigative Genetic Genealogy Center. The college partnered with the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office to work on the case for free, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “I think it shows how investigative genetic genealogy has stepped in and become the most really incredible investigative tool since the advent of DNA.”

CNN —The remains of a Portland, Oregon, teenager who vanished in the late 1960s have been identified through advanced DNA testing more than 50 years after she went missing, authorities said. In 1970, a Boy Scout troop leader discovered the girl’s remains buried in a shallow grave on Sauvie Island in Oregon. Investigators at the time were unable to identify them, but noted that that trauma to the body indicated foul play, Oregon State Police announced in a news release on Thursday. Family members told authorities they believed Young went missing from Portland around the time the remains were discovered, according to the news release. “Sandra Young has now regained her identity after 54 years,” said Dr. Nici Vance of the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office.

Qiagen acquires DNA-biometrics firm Verogen in $150 mln deal

Jan 9 (Reuters) - Life sciences firm Qiagen said on Monday it has acquired DNA-biometrics firm Verogen in a $150-million cash deal, strengthening its forensics portfolio. Qiagen expects about $20 million of sales from the Verogen portfolio this year. The deal is expected to be dilutive to Qiagen's 2023 adjusted profit per share by about 3 cents and neutral to the firm's 2024 profit. San Diego-based Verogen, founded in 2017, provides DNA-based human identification products and services, which are used in forensic analysis and to help resolve criminal and missing persons cases. Verogen's portfolio will complement Qiagen's sample collection and preparation kits, which are used to separate human DNA from forensic investigation samples for analysis.
Police were reportedly able to link the Idaho killings suspect to the crime scene with DNA. They ran DNA through genealogy databases and got a hit, anonymous law enforcement sources told ABC News. CNN reported that police then tracked the suspect back to Pennsylvania, where he was arrested. Experts previously told Insider that those who send their DNA to genealogy companies should do so with caution if they want to protect their genetic privacy. Joseph Giacalone, who used to helm the Bronx's cold case unit, told Insider last month.
